Gentoo LinuxGentoo is a very special flavor of UNIX. It is perhaps one of the most customizable Linux distributions available. Gentoo is built around the source code. Your VPSLink account will be a very basic install including GCC and SSHD. This is what is referred to as a Stage 3 Install. You will definitely need to be comfortable compiling applications to take advantage of Gentoo.

Portage is the heart of Gentoo, and runs a large portion of the operating system. Specifically Portage is the software distribution system for Gentoo. To add new applications, or update existing ones, Portage must be used. More than 10,000 packages currently exist in Portage. To update your system to the latest version of all applications simply type 'emerge -uD world' and everything is up to date!

Due to Portage's resource requirements, Gentoo is not available on the Link-1 plan. Many applications will compile under Gentoo on a Link-2, but the Link-3 plan is required to provide sufficient memory to compile applications such as PHP, Postfix, and MySQL using Portage.
